In January 2011, Grantham was severely damaged in a devastating flash flood that was described as an “inland tsunami”. In May 2011 it was announced that the town would be moved to higher ground to prevent future damaging floods. The council bought 485 hectares of cattle country on a hill overlooking Grantham and subdivided it, offering a land-swap program for residents living on flood affected land. Five months after the floods, construction was already underway on the higher ground and 100 new lots were being constructed. Less than twelve months post floods, community members were relocating to their new homes up on the hill. "New" Grantham now has more than 70 homes.
